Below are answers to some common questions about receiving care at the VSC.

Who is Eligible to Become a Patient at the VSC?

To qualify to obtain care at the VSC, you must be a Wayne County resident AND have a household income at or below 200% of the current Federal Poverty Guidelines.

How Can I Become a Patient at the VSC?

If you wish to receive medical and/or dental care at the VSC, you must first call 330-262-2500 to schedule an appointment with a Patient Intake Coordinator, who will help determine if you are eligible to become a VSC patient and make sure you understand all of the services available to you. If you are eligible to become a patient, the Patient Intake Coordinator will assist you with the New Patient registration process. If you are not eligible to become a VSC patient, the Patient Intake Coordinator will provide you with resources for other healthcare alternatives.

I am a New VSC Patient.  How Can I Receive Care?

Once you are a patient and your record is in our system, you may call a Patient Care Coordinator at 330-262-2500 to schedule an appointment. Patients are seen by appointment Monday through Friday, with a very limited number of available same-day appointments for acute health concerns.

What Services does the VSC Provide for Patients?

Working with dozens of medical partners in the community, the VSC is able to provide high-quality, comprehensive care to patients.  While patients are able to receive many of the services and diagnostic tests in-house, other services are referred to offsite providers.  This level of high-quality healthcare is made possible by the generosity of many local partners.

Comprehensive Medical Care:  Diagnosis, Treatment, and Education

The VSC provides primary care medical services by appointment every weekday to established patients, with a limited number of same-day appointments for acute issues. Care is provided by the VSC’s clinical team, which is made up of the VSC’s full-time Certified Nurse Practitioner and staff nurses and is complemented by the work of physician partner volunteers.  The entire medical team provides care for VSC patients with both acute and chronic medical conditions.

The VSC is able to provide free onsite laboratory services, for diagnosing and monitoring patients, through a valuable partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Wooster, which processes laboratory tests at no charge to the VSC. The VSC can also order radiology services offsite for patients as needed. Aultman Orrville Hospital, Radiology Services of Canton, and Wooster Community Hospital each provide valuable x-ray services to the VSC, saving the VSC an enormous amount of money each year. The VSC is grateful for these extremely generous local partnerships, which allow the clinical staff to provide VSC patients with a high level of medical care.

The VSC clinical team believes that in order to provide responsible care, it must not only diagnose and educate patients, but also provide them with access to free or inexpensive medications.  By doing so, the VSC helps keep patients healthy so they can lead productive lives.  If your VSC staff nurse prescribes medication(s) for you, s/he will provide you with information.

Specialized Medical Care:  Onsite and Offsite

Thanks to the generosity of many professional volunteers, the VSC is able to offer specialty care in the fields of behavioral health counseling, physical therapy, women’s health, urology, dermatology, endocrinology, and infectious disease. In addition, the VSC frequently offers wellness and education workshops addressing topics such as smoking cessation, weight loss, diabetes support, and pain management.

For patients requiring additional medical care beyond the scope of what can be provided at the VSC, patients are referred to over fifty local specialists who provide either free or reduced-cost care to VSC patients.  The VSC is thankful to these medical professionals whose expertise and compassion allow us to provide patients with the full range of healthcare.

Dental Care

The VSC dental clinic offers appointments two days a week for routine dental care including cleanings, fluoride treatments, x-rays and diagnostic examinations, fillings, root canals, extractions, oral cancer examinations, and oral hygiene education.  Due to the high level of demand for dental services, patients are advised that they may need to wait up to three months for a dental appointment.

Case Management Program and Ohio Benefit Bank

At the VSC, we treat the whole patient, not just his/her symptoms. The VSC’s Case Manager connects patients to valuable local assistance programs through the Ohio Benefit Bank, including:  medical insurance, food stamps, housing assistance, food/clothing assistance, heating assistance (HEAP), gas expenses, transportation, tax assistance, and other community resources.

Preschool Vision Screening Program

The Viola Startzman Clinic partners with volunteers from local Lions Clubs to provide vision screening for preschool children ages three to five years old. The goal of the program is to detect and treat vision problems in children before permanent damage has occurred. The screening program, which is free, is available to any Wayne County preschool facility. To schedule a screening at your child’s preschool, please call Jaime Parsons at the clinic at 330-262-2500 extension 102.
